“The path is not long, but the walk is deep. You must not only walk there, you must be prepared to leap.”  – Hildegard von Bingen

Take the leap, and discover your own wings you never knew you had.

Countdown to St. Hildegard's Feast Day September 17th!
Welcome fellow Hildegardians!

To be in the Land of Hildegard is to slow down and listen to the rhythms of life itself. Walking along the Saint Hildegard Pilgrimage Trail in the autumn is to allow yourself to be transported back in time. We invite you to explore with us ancient monasteries, medieval villages, forest walks, rolling hills with active vineyards, that quietly intermesh with the modern world.

From the first sight of the ruins of Disibodenberg at the top of the mountain, to the glimpse of the mighty river Rhine through the forest, you will feel the spirit of Hildegard and her belief that “All of creation is song in praise to God.”

Disibodenberg is a pilgrimage highlight.

Some friendships aren’t merely shared – they shape us in unanticipated ways as we move forward. Every turn on the journey carries memory of a celebration, a season, a quiet walk to be savored with new friends.

Beyond the trail, we will explore a 4th generation vineyard and taste the traditions that come from the land and its bounty. Visit modern interpretations of Hildegard inspired gardens. Investigate the Roman-era history of the area that pre-dates Hildegard and continues to inform how the Rhinelands are used and preserved.

Evening concert at Disibodenberg

Attend evening concerts, discussions, workshops on music, nutrition and herbs, and the Sacred Feminine. And of course, the capstone of our time together is the sacred day of community and reflection in Eibingen at the Feast Day of St Hildegard at the Pilgrimage Church on September 17th at the present day Hildegard Abbey at the crest of the hill above the river.

This isn’t just a trip to Germany – it’s an invitation to join in a living story of friendship and discovery, a chance to learn and uncover your own personal connection with a revered mystic and saint, and allow the spirit of Hildegard and Viriditas to become a part of your life. “Like billowing clouds, like the incessant gurgle of the brook, the longing of the spirit can never be stilled.” This uniquely curated journey will drop you into an experience of beauty, depth, joy, and sense of renewed wonder and awe.

I speak for all of us, who have worked hard and with much enthusiasm on realizing this project, when I say now: Welcome for a visit in the land of Hildegard. Welcome for a Hildegard Pilgrimage! In Saint Hildegard’s words: o quam mirabilis – how wondrously – how wonderful! – Dr. Annette Esser

Who was Hildegard von Bingen?

Saint Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) has been called seeress, composer, physician, German prophetess. In 2012, she was promoted as Doctor of the Universal Church (Doctor Ecclesiae Universalis) by Pope Benedict XVI; she was only the fourth woman to receive this honor besides Catarina of Siena, Teresa of Ávila and Thérèse of Lisieux. On September 9, 2017, the new Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Route (Pilgerwanderweg) leading from Idar-Obersten to Bingen on the Rhine has been officially opened at the Disibodenberg, the very site where this mystic lived for almost 40 years of her life.

The Hildegard Way

Hildegardweg” was established with support from the European Union in 2013 and is a 140 km pilgrimage trail through the Nahe river region in Germany. The trail begins in Ida-Oberstein, leading past the monastery ruins of Disibodenburg and Hildegard’s Rupertsburg Abbey, concluding at the Abbey of Saint Hildegard in Einbingen.

The concept of these Hildegardweg tableaux was developed by Dr. Annette Esser and written up by a team of authors facilitated by the Scivias Institute, including sisters of St. Hildegard Abbey: of these, 27 meditation tableaux follow Hildegard’s major mystical work, the Liber Scivias, and 31 information tableaux present Hildegard‘s medical, musical and ethical works and on the historical sites where the saint lived. These tableaux are in German and English.

New for 2026

We’ve expanded our tour portfolio with a new transformative journey: Walking in the Footsteps of John Muir: Scottish Beginnings, taking place in late spring 2026.

I would love to get more information about the pilgrimage in Sept 2026- I can’t find any links, email or phone contacts? Could you please direct me to the best place/person to find this information? Thanks!

Hi Dawn, in order to avoid spam, we are not providing email and phone contacts here. If you use the sign-up form for the newsletter on the website home page, or under Contact Us in the header menu. Then those contact details will be more available to you.

I cannot walk during the group time but plan to walk June 24-29 . Is there a way to organize a solo walk?

I too would like to do the walk. More so independently in 25/26. As I live in Australia, an organised tour, as lovely as it would be, would not be viable if I also had to travel to the US to depart.
It is sad that other areas outside of the US are not taken into consideration.

This pilgrimage is open to anyone, any where who wishes to join us. Participants may book their own air travel from their home country or state. We are only providing a departure city of Denver, Colorado, for those who find it more convenient to take a direct flight. Some of us are Colorado residents, which is why Denver was selected as the departure city. Just book as Land-based only traveller.

Good evening,

I’ve been looking for an organized opportunity to walk Hildegard’s Way. This event looks spectacular. I reside in eastern Canada. Is it possible to register, without the cost of airfare, but make my own travel arrangements and meet the group in Germany?

Warm blessing,
Suzanne Mason

Is there a way to travel this pilgrimage independently? A list of accommodations along the way? Or does one have to go as part of an organized tour?

The local support for suitable accommondations along the way isn’t really there yet. In 2024, for our pilgrimage, we are staying at one place for accommodation and then we go out via a tour shuttle to our selected walking highlights of the Hildegard Way. That is what worked for us in 2019.

Buongiorno dall’Italia.

I live in Torrance, California, USA. I was gifted The Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage book on Santa Lucia Day, 2022. Oh, we would love to experience the Land of Hildegard in person. Please keep us posted on the next Pilgrimage to be offered like the 2019 Tour.
